About Steven U. Allen

I am Steven Ulysses Allen — a teacher first, and a writer because of it. Everything I publish grows out of the questions my students ask me, the books we read together, and the long habit of paying attention.

I have spent years teaching science, including biology, physics, environmental science, marine science, and Earth and space science. Before the classroom, I served in the United States Army and reached the rank of Captain, with leadership responsibilities as an officer and work involving safety and large organizations. Those two careers still shape how I write: the teacher brings curiosity and explanation, and the officer brings organization, preparation, strategy, and an awareness that decisions have consequences.

My fiction crosses science fiction, fantasy, horror, mystery, historical fiction, and military adventure, but it keeps returning to one question: what happens when ordinary people are placed inside extraordinary systems and have to figure out how those systems work? If you would like the long answer, read my writing style, a full look at the worldbuilding, characters, and ideas behind the books.

This page is where I introduce myself as a person, not just a name on a book jacket. Alongside my published work, I keep a daily journal here: short entries on teaching, reading, and the small moments that make a classroom worth showing up for.
